September 2, 2007 - Our 8th Wedding Anniversary

Last night was our 8th wedding anniversary! Joel asked me a few weeks ago what I'd like as a gift. I told him that I'd love to go out to dinner with him, just the two of us, to a nice non-chain restaurant. He chose a place that was less than 5 minutes from our house and was rated one of the top restaurants in the DFW area, an Italian place called Capriccio's. We made a late night of it as our reservation was for 9:15 pm, so that we could go and not worry about our girls missing us.
When we got there only one other dinner party was dining. They left within ten minutes of our arrival so we had the place and the excellent service all to ourselves. The waiter was awesome and very kind. It turns out that we had some things in common; he lived in NYC, his wife is from San Bernardino, and they used to live in Newport Beach!
We started out our special meal by choosing a bottle of wine. They happened to be out of the particular bottle that Joel chose for us so we got a delicious red zinfandel from the Francis Coppola collection 2004. It was a delicious choice...smooth and not too sweet. Then for our appetizer we had calamari with a marinara sauce. It was soft and not even close to being over cooked. Next we had minestrone soup that puts all other minestrone's to shame. It was flavorful and even had little slices of garlic in it. Then came our entree, the special of the day, fresh salmon with a Dijon sauce topped with shrimp and scallops. It was light, flaky, tender and absolutely amazing. The sides, of veggies and pasta, though sides, were still delicious and could have made a meal in themselves. After the first courses we were served our desserts and cappuccinos. Joel ordered the creme brule which had a subtle lemon flavor that was not in anyway overpowering. I ordered the tiramisu which was moist with a strong espresso flavor set nicely against the strawberry and dark chocolate drizzle. There were also little puffs of freshly whipped cream and a lovely ripe strawberry to top it off! The cappuccinos were strong, but not bitter and needed no sugar. They perfectly complimented the sweetness of our desserts! As a sweet surprise, for the celebration of our anniversary, our server brought us each a flute of the most bubbly champagne we've ever tasted!
Over dinner Joel and I had a wonderful conversation, of course! We talked of our various travels and the amazing things that the Lord has done in our lives. We laughed so much that my cheeks hurt at the end of our evening. Joel made a superb choice in that restaurant, and as we told our waiter, it was the most delicious and perfect meal we've ever had, in all our lives! Ah, I think Capriccio's could quite possibly become our special anniversary destination!
